SMA vs RP-SMA Connectors: How to Identify the Correct Gender
ONELINKMORE engineering guide: Use this reference to narrow the connector or cable configuration before ordering. Always confirm the interface, center contact, impedance, frequency range, mounting style and cable requirements for the specific system.
Why SMA and RP-SMA are easy to confuse
SMA and reverse-polarity SMA connectors share a similar threaded outer body, but the center contact arrangement is different. The words male and female describe the connector body and coupling interface; RP-SMA changes the center contact while retaining the outer gender. A connector can therefore have male threads with a socket center contact, or female threads with a pin center contact.
Four checks before purchasing
- Outer coupling: Identify whether the connector uses the external coupling nut or the mating internal thread.
- Center contact: Look directly at the center and confirm whether it is a pin or a receptacle.
- Standard or reverse polarity: Do not assume polarity from the device type. Wi-Fi and FPV equipment can use either configuration.
- Mounting and orientation: Check straight versus right-angle construction, bulkhead mounting, panel thickness and available clearance.
Common selection mistakes
- Buying an SMA adapter when the device uses RP-SMA.
- Matching only the threads and overlooking the center contact.
- Confusing connector gender with the gender of the center pin.
- Ordering an adapter that fits physically but does not meet the required frequency or installation needs.
